LEEDARSON’s A19 Tunable White Bulb uses Nordic’s nRF52840 SoC for wireless control over open-source Matter protocol

Xiamen, China-based Internet of Things (IoT) technology company, LEEDARSON, has selected Nordic Semiconductor’s nRF52840 Bluetooth Low Energy (Bluetooth LE) advanced multiprotocol System-on-Chip (SoC) to provide the core processing power and wireless connectivity for its ‘A19 Tunable White Bulb’.

The smart LED bulb is designed to replace a conventional bulb, enabling users to wirelessly control indoor lighting in a smart home or commercial building using any compatible connected device, or using voice control via a smart home ecosystem such as Amazon’s Alexa, Apple’s Siri, or Google’s Assistant. A19 Tunable White Bulb comes in a 108 by 60mm form factor, is dimmable from 100 to 3 percent, tunable from warm white (2700K) to cool white (6500K), features static and dynamic scenes for different light experiences (for example, wake-up/sunset), and provides a lifespan of approximately 25,000 hours.

Secure Bluetooth LE commissioning

Using the Bluetooth LE connectivity provided by the Nordic SoC, a screwed-in A19 Tunable White Bulb can be securely commissioned from a Bluetooth 4.0 (and later) smartphone via a third party iOS or Android app. Once connected to the network, the smart LED bulb can be wirelessly controlled using Nordic SoC-enabled Thread – a wireless protocol designed for low-power, low-bandwidth network applications including mains-powered devices such as smart light bulbs.

 LEEDARSON’s A19 Tunable White Bulb solution runs over Matter – an application protocol built on top of the mature Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and User Datagram Protocol (UDP), as well as the mature Internet Protocol (IPv6) and other lower-layer protocols including Bluetooth LE and Thread. The Matter protocol is designed to enable interoperable communication between smart home devices, mobile app, and Cloud services. Nordic’s nRF52840 SoC can concurrently run an application, Thread stack (OpenThread), and Bluetooth LE stack (comprising a Zephyr Host and Nordic SoftDevice Controller) on its 64MHz, 32-bit Arm® Cortex® M4 processor with floating point unit (FPU).
